During a sibship test, the genetic profile of each potential sibling is obtained and compared to determine the sibship index (the likelihood that they are siblings). Unlike a paternity test or maternity test which consistently provides conclusive results, sibship testing can only provide a statistical indication of the likelihood that two individuals are siblings. Usually, a sibship test is conducted only as a last resort because the mother and alleged father are deceased or unavailable for testing. Patients who decide to proceed with a sibship test should be fully aware of the benefits as well as the limitations of sibship testing before proceeding.

Testing Procedure

If you are requiring the test for personal knowledge only, we will require a buccal swab sample for testing. The buccal swab is a safe and painless method for collecting DNA from inside the mouth. You can quickly and safely collect the buccal sample yourself discreetly in the privacy of your own home. The swabs are then sent directly to our laboratory for analysis. If you would like to arrange a private test, a buccal swab collection package will be sent to you.
