Testing Procedure

If you are requiring the test for personal knowledge only, we will require a buccal swab sample for testing. The buccal swab is a safe and painless method for collecting DNA from inside the mouth. You can quickly and safely collect the buccal sample yourself discreetly in the privacy of your own home. After collection, the swabs are sent directly to our laboratory for analysis. If you are requiring a test for legal use, please contact the laboratory to discuss your situation and to determine whether we will be able to assist you. Please note that the regulations for legal testing vary greatly between different regions. Always check first with your lawyer or the requesting organization before proceeding with a legal test. Please note that for legal tests, you will have to attend an appointment for sample collection. A fingerprint and photograph will be taken at the time of the appointment and the collection procedure will be witnessed and documented by a third party witness. You must also bring two valid identification documents to the appointment.

Testing at Birth

A DNA paternity test can be conducted on patients at any age, including newborns. A DNA paternity test can be conducted at the time of birth using umbilical cord blood obtained at the time of delivery. If you would like to perform a test at the time of delivery, please contact our laboratory by phone to request a cord blood collection package for your physician. If you are interested in cord blood testing, please arrange for testing at least one month prior to the due date.

Prenatal Testing

A DNA paternity test can be conducted before the child is born using a chorionic villus sample or amniotic fluid. Please contact our laboratory to discuss your situation and to make arrangements if you are considering prenatal testing.

Always find out how many genetic locations a laboratory will examine and whether your test will be run two times to determine whether you are receiving a high quality test. A low quality test examines less than 12 genetic regions and sometimes even as little as 6 regions are examined for you.
